FAQs
Is my car too hot or cold for a plant?
If your world is regularly above 85 degrees outside, get a succulent and you’re good-to-go. Done and done. Guaranteed.
For plants, the average running car interior temperature is perfect for them - if you’re comfortable, then so is your Leafve. In many parts of the country, the milder temperatures of spring and fall (and some winters) means your pet plant can hang out with you 24/7.
But cars can get pretty hot inside, right? At times yes, but our plants are specifically selected to be tolerant of light and heat, and our cars are rolling greenhouses anyway; they can handle more than you think. Just make sure of a couple things, to keep your pet plant happy:
If you treat your Leafve the same way as a furry pet, you’re plant will be fine. That means if you’re leaving the car for a long period and think it’ll get exceedingly hot, just make sure it has plenty of water, crack the windows, and/or tilt the sunroof. A sunshade in the front windshield will keep most direct sun off your pet.
If your plant isn’t a succulent, and your car’s interior temperature will get hot (over 85 degrees F/25 C outside), or will drop way-below freezing, either bring it with you on your errand, or leave it at home that day. That’s it!
How often do I water my Leafve?
As with any plant, that depends on the plant and the weather. Generally, if you water the soil and add water to the reservoir, your Leafve should be fine for a week or two. Don’t overwater, just wait until the soil is dry before giving more H20.
Succulents prefer to be mostly dry, so wait for them to completely dry out before adding water.
What if my cupholder is always occupied with a drink?
Most cars come with at least two cupholders up front, and sometimes two more in the door panels. If they’re all full, don’t forget there’s usually two more for the rear seat. That way you can pretend it’s hanging out in its baby seat. (Leafve plants don’t mind being chauffeured in the least.)
There’s also plenty of online accessories that will expand your car’s cupholder capacity, or attach to an air vent. Never fear!
Will the pot fit in my cupholder?
Much like any coffee cup, your Leafve container is designed to fit any-sized cupholder. Although our current size will fit anywhere (including your work desk or kitchen counter,) we’re currently developing a larger container, to decorate and fill out larger cars, trucks, SUVs, RVs, semis, and combines. Stay tuned!
Will my Leafve clean the air in my car?
Yes and no. When you think about it, your car is one of the smartest places to keep a plant - our cars are probably the most-toxic environment we regularly use, and it’s been proven that plants can scrub the air of some pretty nasty chemicals (more about this in our blog). But it would take lots and lots of plants to begin to balance the toxins in our car’s environment; rolling down the window is more efficient for fresh air. Suffice it to say, no matter what, your car will feel and smell fresher, and it’s been proven that just gazing at a plant will make you feel more relaxed!
There’s three plant choices. Which kind should I order for where I live?
Think 72/22 degrees F/C - whether it’s hot or cold out, we expect you’ll ride / live / work with the AC or heat going. Everyone, including your Leafve is happy (although delicate flowers, like pansies, may wilt if the AC is blowing on them). If you’re parked and the temperature will change to an extreme, see above: “Is my car too hot/cold for a plant?”
After considering that, if you’re mostly in a hot place, go for a succulent. They live for the heat.
I want a flowering plant. What’s the difference between an “annual” and a “perennial”?
An annual is seasonal - it will grow up, happily flower for a period, then eventually die. This could span several months, depending on the plant. A perennial will flower for a few weeks or more, then go dormant, and repeat this process over a couple of years or so. Think of perennials as a tried-and-true friend, always there for your stories, but kind of frumpy. An annual is the craziest friend you’ve ever had, the life of the party, but is donezos when the sun comes up.
Will my plant be chosen for the season?
Yes. We’ll send you what’s fresh for that day and appropriate for the season, just a baby version of our plants here on the website.
Can my Leafve get sunburned?
Succulents, no. Some plants, yes. Sunlight through glass is intense. If you’re parked for a long time and it’s going to be hot and sunny on your plant, make sure it has water, crack the windows, and put up your sunshade in the windshield.
How often should I water my Leafve?
Most of the flowering and plant choices like to stay moist, but not always wet. After the soil becomes dry to the touch, add to the soil and refill the reservoir - depending on the weather, this should last for a week or two. Generally, let the plant drink what it wants. Be sure the soil is dry before adding water again.
Succulents can survive longer between watering, and actually prefer to remain in dry soil longer. Watch for wilting and shriveling of the stems and leaves.
What do I buy next, if the flowering plant goes dormant or dies?
Our subscription service will take care of that - a new plant type of your choice, sent to your doorstep at the beginning of each season! Otherwise, look for nursery plant six-packs, which are a perfect size for the Leafve containers, or baby succulents in 2” containers. Plant its five siblings in five new Leafves, as gifts for your friends.
